Tesla ‘Very Close’ to Level 5 Autonomous Driving Technology, Musk Says
US electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is “very close” to achieving 5-level autonomous driving technology, chief executive Elon Musk said on Thursday, referring to the ability to navigate the roads without any driver input.
Musk said in a comment made via a video message from Shanghai’s annual World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), “I am confident that Level 5 or essentially will have full autonomy and I think it will happen very quickly.” ”
“I believe we will have the basic functionality for this year’s Level 5 autonomy.”
Automakers and tech companies including Alphabet Waymo and Uber Technology are investing billions in the autonomous driving industry.
However, industry insiders have said that it will take time for the technology to be ready and going public to fully rely on autonomous vehicles.
The California-based automaker currently manufactures cars with an autopilot driver-assistance system.
Musk said Tesla is also developing new heat-projection or cooling systems to enable more advanced computers in cars.
