ISRO Chandrayaan 2 Launch Live Streaming Online: Chandrayaan 2 is all set to break past the Earth’s escape velocity and start its journey towards the planet’s only natural satellite, the Moon. Over one billion Indians are eagerly waiting for this proud moment and will be catching the live updates of Chandrayaan 2’s launch. India’s second lunar mission Chandrayaan 2 will also be the country’s first to carry a rover which will soft-land on the lunar surface. Chandrayaan 2 will explore the unchartered territory of the Moon’s south polar region. On Sunday, July 21, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) started the countdown for the launch of Chandrayaan 2 onboard its “Baahubali” rocket GSLV MK III. The countdown started at 1843 Hrs IST on Sunday and the launch of Chandrayaan 2 is scheduled at 1443 Hrs IST on Monday, July 22. Earlier the launch of Chandrayaan 2 was scheduled on July 15 but ISRO, just in the nick of time, aborted its launch mission due to a “technical snag” in the launch vehicle.
Later, on Sunday, ISRO informed that the fuel filling of the liquid core stage of Chandrayaan 2’s launch vehicle GSLV MkIII M1 was completed. Chandrayaan 2s launch vehicle is ISRO’s most robust and advanced rocket and its success will further give the agency capacity to carry out more complex missions like Gaganyaan which is planned as a manned mission.

The launch will happen at 2.43 PM, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota.

Objective Of Chandrayaan 2 Launch

As per ISRO’s notes, the Chandrayaan 2 mission will attempt to land the Lander (Vikram) and the Rover (Pragyan) at a location between Manzinus C and Simpelius N, at a latitude of about 70 degrees south.
This is situated on the South Pole, a region where no other space mission has ever reached, and as per theories, this region can have the presence of water.
The Chanrayaan-1 mission has discovered water molecules on the lunar surface, and now Chandrayaan-2 will attempt to discover water or water molecules below the surface and in the tenuous lunar exosphere.
ISRO said, “There is a possibility of the presence of water in permanently shadowed areas around it. In addition, the South Pole region has craters that are cold traps and contain a fossil record of the early Solar System.”

Technical Information About The Mission:

GSLV Mk-III: This is India’s most powerful launcher, capable of carrying 4-ton class of satellites to the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
Orbiter: It weighs 2,379 kg and has an in-built electric power generation capability of 1,000 Watt. This will be placed in the 100×100 km lunar polar orbit, by GSLV Mk-III.
Lander: Codenamed Vikram, this weighs 1471 Kg and can generate 600 W of power.
Rover: Codenamed as Pragyan, this weighs 27 Kg, and can generate 50W of power, and can move up to 500 meters.

Motorola P50 will go on sale in China on July 20, Lenovo-owned smartphone brand on Thursday announced. The smartphone, which is a rebranded version of the Motorola One Vision, loses Android One branding and Google services for its China release. It is unlikely that Motorola will use the P50 branding for the phone in any other markets outside China. Like the Motorola One Vision, the Motorola P50 comes with the dual rear camera setup, 25-megapixel selfie shooter in a hole-punch design, and a full-HD+ display with 21:9 aspect ratio.

Motorola P50 price has been set at CNY 2,499 (roughly Rs. 25,000) for its lone 6GB + 128GB model and the pre-orders for the smartphone will open July 15 in the country, Lenovo VP Chang Cheng announced in a Weibo post. The actual sales will start July 20, as we mentioned earlier, via all major e-retailers and Motorola will be offering the P50 in two color options – Brown Gradient, Sapphire Gradient.

The dual-SIM (Nano) Motorola P50 runs on Android 9 Pie and sports a 6.34-inch full-HD+ (1080×2520 pixels) display with 21:9 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass. The exact processor present in the phone is unclear, but it is believed to be the octa-core Samsung Exynos 9609 SoC, clocked at 2.2GHz and paired with Mali G72 MP3 GPU, like the Motorola One Vision.
Among other specifications, the phone includes 4GB of RAM, 128GB of onboard storage with a microSD card slot (up to 512GB), and 3,500mAh battery with fast charging support.
In terms of the camera capabilities, Motorola P50 comes with a dual rear camera setup, which houses a 48-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.7 lens with optical image stabilization support. There is a 5-megapixel secondary sensor as well. For selfies, Motorola has included a 25-megapixel sensor on the front with an f/2.0 lens.

SpaceX Launches Falcon Heavy Rocket With 24 Satellites

SpaceX launched its Falcon Heavy rocket on Tuesday from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying 24 experimental satellites in what Elon Musk’s rocket company called one of the most difficult launches it has attempted.
The craft blasted off to cheers from onlookers at 12:00 pm IST after a three-hour delay from the original launch time late Monday.
The boosters separated safely and the craft began its six-hour mission to deploy the satellites.
The mission, dubbed Space Test Program 2 (STP-2), is the third for the Falcon Heavy rocket, which SpaceX describes as the most powerful launch system in the world.
It was commissioned by the US Department of Defense, the key contractor for commercial space companies such as SpaceX.
The company is putting satellites into orbit for agencies including NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), defence department laboratories, universities and a non-profit organization, SpaceX said.
The mission is one of the most challenging in SpaceX history, with four separate upper-stage engine burns and three separate orbits to deploy satellites, the company said on its website.
The company also plans to recover the three first-stage core boosters for re-use in other missions.

The payloads on the satellites Falcon Heavy is putting into orbit include an atomic clock NASA is testing for space navigation, another testing new telescope technologies, and a solar sail project part-funded by the Planetary Society, a non-profit organization headed by Bill Nye, “The Science Guy” on television presentations.
The LightSail is a crowdfunded project that aims to become the first spacecraft in earth orbit propelled solely by sunlight, the society, which has championed solar propulsion for decades, says on its website.
Falcon Heavy is the most powerful operational rocket in the world “by a factor of two,” SpaceX says on its website. It has the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 pounds) – more than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage, and fuel.
Only the Saturn V moon rocket, last flown in 1973 from the same launch pad, delivered more payload to orbit, it says.

Govt Plans INR 1,000 Crore Fund For Startups In Priority Areas

To boost startups, DPIIT has recommended regulatory changes aimed at promoting venture capital and angel investments, especially from Indian investors.
The government proposes to introduce a slew of reforms and another fund to boost startups that are focussed on priority areas such as rural healthcare, water, and waste management, clean energy solutions, cybersecurity, and drones.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) plans to set up an India Startup Fund with an initial amount of Rs 1,000 crore.

The department for the promotion of industry & internal trade (DPIIT) is planning to set up an India Startup Fund with an initial corpus of Rs.10 billion, reported Economic Times. The proposal is to provide seed funds to 5,000 startups that are focused on priority areas such as rural healthcare, water, and waste management, clean energy solutions, cybersecurity, and drones. The DPIIT may consider including startups focused on other technologies like the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence at a later stage. The startup dedicated fund is separate from the fund of funds for startups (FFS) which was set up in 2016 under the Small Industries Development Bank of India. The Rs.100 billion FFS makes downstream investments in venture capital and alternative investment funds that in turn invest in startups.
“The government needs to supply seed funds for hi-tech, innovative startups. The proposal is to produce seed funds to five,000 startups in priority areas,” a senior government official responsive to the proposal told ET.
The dedicated fund, projected within the department’s 100-day Action arrange, is break away the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), that was found out in 2016 underneath the little Industries Development Bank of Asian nation. The Rs 10,000 large integer fund of funds makes downstream investments in risk capital and various assets that successively invest in startups.

Besides, the govt. has pitched to treat outsourced R&D efforts on par with in-house R&D for incentivization functions and easier movement of researchers between domain, public analysis establishments, entrepreneurship, and trade.

Huawei’s Android alternative is coming this fall with Android app compatibility

The biggest story in the tech world this week is President Trump’s executive order to restrict U.S. companies from supplying products to Huawei.

According to a report by Chinese publication Caijing, Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, has revealed details about Huawei’s OS.

The OS will be compatible with all Android apps and they can also be recompiled to improve performance.
After the news of Google revoking Huawei’s Android license, many assumed that they would simply build an OS based on AOSP. It may not be that simple.

So this news of Android app support is a pretty big deal since other Android alternatives, such as Tizen, do not support Android apps out of the box. Flipkart Introduces Automated Guided Vehicles at its Sortation Facility in Bangalore

India’s leading e-commerce marketplace Flipkart has introduced the country’s first robot-based sortation technology, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), at its Soukya sortation center in Bangalore.
Designed to optimize efficiency and precision on the back-end of the supply chain, the AGVs help sort packages by pin code.
Flipkart said the technology will help the company meet ever-growing customer and scale demands, ensuring faster delivery and an enhanced experience for online shoppers.
Over 100 AGVs launched at Soukya sortation facility
The Soukya set-up now involves over 100 self-guided bots that automatically sort packages to the right customer pin codes by identifying encoded information on each package.
At present, the facility has around 1000 employees and processes lakhs of shipments a day. The company said that the AGVs will work in conjunction with facility staff, who will be trained in operating the bots.
Tests conducted by the company indicate deploying 100 of these AGVs can lead to over 60 percent increase in process efficiency.
As per the company, the set-up can process up to 4,500 shipments in an hour and can be scaled over 5x with minimal changes. The other advantage is that they can be easily moved across locations as well.
Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Robotics & Automation
Flipkart also plans to partner with startups and university campuses to drive innovation and research in automation and robotics space.
The company announced that it will build a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Robotics & Automation, which will bring engineering, product, and automation teams under one umbrella.
In the future, the CoE will also focus on IoT and electric vehicles, it said.
Sharing his views on the launch of the AGVs, Krishna Raghavan, Senior Vice President of eKart Tech at Flipkart, said, “With the Automated Guided Vehicles, we are re-imagining new growth paths while orchestrating new and innovative ways of working. We believe this will help bring efficiencies, agility, and scale to the supply chain operations, helping us serve the customer better.”
He added, “This India-first initiative is the first stepping stone in this journey. Going forward, we will be looking at how we can help build the country’s nascent automation ecosystem through R&D and collaboration so we can continue building India-specific solutions.”

Scientists Release the First Image of a Massive Black Hole

OF all the enigmatic phenomena in our universe, there’s perhaps one that has captured our attention and imagination the most, even though we had never actually seen one: the black hole. These space objects are so dense that even light cannot escape their grip. Ever since Einstein first proposed their existence, we’ve made simulations, art, and CGI versions of what we imagine black holes could look like. But it wasn’t until this morning that we saw a black hole for the first time. We have finally gazed into the cosmic abyss.

On Wednesday morning, teams of scientists around the world who work on an experiment called the Event Horizon Telescope released a much-anticipated image of the ultramassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy. This galaxy is 55 million light-years away in the Virgo supercluster, and it is 6.5 billion times more massive than our sun. “You’re looking at a black hole that is essentially the size of our entire solar system,” says Sera Markoff, EHT team member and professor of theoretical astrophysics at the University of Amsterdam.

Capturing an image of a black hole is exceedingly difficult. It’s not like taking a photo of a planet, or a cluster of stars, or even another galaxy. It’s not as simple as using the Hubble Space Telescope. “We never thought this was possible,” says Priyamvada Natarajan, professor of astronomy and physics at Yale University.

Natarajan is not involved with the EHT team, but she’s been studying black holes for nearly 20 years. “We’re in the grip of a black hole!” she said, hardly able to contain her excitement. She and many others in her field have waited years for this data. It did not disappoint.

The Event Horizon Telescope is an array of radio telescopes around the world that are collectively so powerful that together they create a telescope as large as the Earth. The images and data they produce are so massive that the scientists had to wait to capture the images until hard drives existed that could hold all the information. “It is a huge technical feat,” says Natarajan.

“It’s a reframing of our cosmic view.”

The sheer quantity of information from the EHT left researchers with five petabytes of recorded data. “That’s more than a half a ton of hard drives,” says EHT team member Daniel Marrone. “It’s equivalent to 5,000 years of MP3 files or the entire selfie collection over a lifetime for 40,000 people.”

Despite the mind-boggling hard drives needed to complete the work, the actual image of M87 is only a few hundred kilobytes. “We had to collapse five petabytes of data into an image that’s five billion times smaller,” Marrone says.

The image itself contains an enormous scientific value. “In astronomy and physics, pictures are extremely meaningful,” says Natarajan. “They have an agency to shift our thinking. They have a transformative capacity because you can see things visually because most of the things in astronomy we are dealing with the unseen.

“It’s a reframing of our cosmic view.”

The photo shared by the EHT team shows the black hole in M87 as it was 55 million years ago, just 10 million years after the dinosaurs went extinct. The picture that we see is light that traversed the cosmos to reach our telescopes. It’s not new. It’s just new to us.

For the first time, we can see the accretion disc and the shadow of the event horizon—the point of light with no return—which is the dark circular shape in the center. Scientists are still unsure how the debris surrounding a black hole falls in or gets expelled out, so this photo will likely help answer some of those questions.

“Now we know that superheated, supermassive black holes existed at the center of most galaxies, but because they are so small, we’ve never seen one,” says Shep Doeleman, EHT director and Harvard senior research fellow.

We can only see black holes while they are eating material around them. If a star passes too close, for example, the mass of the black hole will rip that star to shreds, creating markers of gas and magnetic signals we can study from Earth.

Black holes also burp and emit high energy jets of gas that we can see. These jets are so intense they can carry the power of 10 billion supernova. While this ultramassive black hole is dead, maxed out on mass and no longer able to take in any more material, the sheer gravitational influence of it destroys anything that comes close, giving off beacons of light for us to see.

The findings from the EHT team are unprecedented and are sure to usher in a new era of our understanding of black holes as well as general relativity, dark matter, and a myriad cosmic mysteries.

“The EHT project is dedicated to the idea that we can make an image of this black hole,” said Doeleman. “We have seen what we thought was unseeable. Here it is.”

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) is inviting applications from innovators and startups working in deep technology domains for admission to an incubation programme through its autonomous body Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT).
The Platform for Harnessing Deep technologies (Ph.D.) incubation programme intends to support deep technology ideas that have substantial market potential.

Under this programme, techno-entrepreneurs will be given infrastructure, mentorship, and funding support to take the quantum leap towards commercialization.

The Ph.D. Incubator Programme provides comprehensive support for converting your idea into a startup, including a fellowship and accommodation to the budding entrepreneur as well as funds for the development of proof of concept,” said Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT-Delhi.
Duration for incubation and funding support
The incubation and funding support will be provided for over a period of 24 months in determined installments. The funds will be released as per the progress made under predetermined milestones decided based on the objectives of the project.

However, mentorship and networking opportunities will be provided even after the completion of this incubation period.
The entrepreneur/startup is required to be physically incubated at the Sonipat Residential Incubator (SRI) at IIT Delhi’s extension campus for the entire duration of this programme.
The project leader will be provided free boarding and lodging at the SRI while other team members can avail accommodation at the facility on a paid basis.
The last date to submit the application is April 30, 2019.
